Abstract

Traditionally, in the past, the intake and EIld!aust design was performed by empirical arguments or by graphical methods using wave propagation theory. Recently, whit the important development in the computer capability, numerical methods have been applied to solve this problem, whose principal
equation come from the gas-dynamic theory. In general these equation are coupled whit some thermodynamic equation applied to the principal devices of an engine, such as cylinder, air inmke, tanks, muftlers, etc. The mathematical model is based on a thermodynamic and a one dimensional gasdynamic description of the intalte and exhaust system. We have used a TVD scheme to solve the Euler equations arise from the gas-dynamic model with the mass and energy conservation equations for the cylinder. For the coupling between tank: or cylinder and pipe we have used the Benson model [1] taking into account the possibility of subsonic or sonic flow through the intake and exhaust valves. For the coupling between pipes and junctions we have implemented a model presented by Corberan [2] based on an enthalpy and entropy balance at the bifurcation device. In this work we wish to present some result oblained with the software developed.
