Abstract

Frequently the low-rise buildings used for houses are not subjected to a high level of engineering analysis, as is the case with larger structures. However they suffer great damages in occasion of natural hazards as tornadoes, hurricanes and severe storms. In the last decades experimental tests at the wind tunnel have given place to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the static and dynamic action using physical models. Alternatively and more recently, numerical studies using computational fluid dynamic techniques have achieved similar goals. though this tool appears as complementary.
This work is the fust stage of a study about the most adequate design of low-rise buildings for houses to resist effis;iently wind action. Numerical tools (finite element
method) are employed using pressure data from the wind tunnel. The objective is the complement of both techniques. Additionally two approaches to achieve general solutions and simplicity without disregarding security and economy are commented. One of them is the generalization of the response using influence functions. The other is the simplification of the wind pressure description over the structures.
