Abstract

The application to solid mechanics of the invariant variational principles to obtain the energy momentum tensor and path independent integrals is advocated and illustrated by the example of plane state. Int the presence of defects, the Irwing's crack extension force associated to the energy release rate equals the J path independent integral, which proved to be of great interest in fracture mechanics. In a systematic way this formulation is extended to plates and shells theory and the appropriate energy momentum tensor and the J path independent integral for cracked plates and shells is derived.
