Post-doctoral fellowships at Computational Imaging Lab, Barcelona, Spain

Computational Imaging Lab

Pompeu Fabra University

Barcelona, Spain

The Computational Imaging Lab at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona
provides an exciting environment for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.
High quality research and the vibrant international atmosphere combine to
ensure that fellows have access to all they need at this critical career
stage.

CILab provides opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary research and to
acquire a broad perspective on medical problems and the technological
approaches that can be used to address them.

CILab research focuses on algorithmic and applied research in the area of
computational imaging, modelling and simulation. In particular, medical
image segmentation, statistical shape modelling and analysis, computational
geometry, pattern recognition and image-based and personalised computational
mechanics are among the Lab's areas of expertise.

CILab seeks proactive and talented young post-doctoral researchers with
proven track record of publications in leading international journals and
conferences. Candidates should be creative, have the ability to carry out
independent research and interact within an international research team. We
are interested in individuals with excellent communication and leadership
skills, able to effectively collaborate with fellow colleagues and
contribute to the visibility of the Lab in the international scientific
community.

The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and be able to interact with
other disciplines is essential.

Title: Post-doctoral fellows in computational cardiac electromechanics

Job description: This post is connected to a national technology platform
funded by the Ministry of Industry that aims at applying computational
imaging and simulation technologies to patient selection and interventional
planning in cardiac resynchronization therapy. Our aim is to develop dynamic
anatomical models of the whole heart as well as to derive boundary
conditions and material properties from multimodal imagery (e.g. 3D US, MRI,
MSCT, SPECT). Integration of all this information will be performed by
combination of computational imaging tools with computational mechanics in
order to deliver advanced diagnosis and personalized treatment planning and
optimization.

The candidate will have to interact with members of the lab of related
topics as well as with our clinical collaborators at several academic
hospitals in Barcelona.

Candidate expected skills: Candidates must hold a PhD degree and should have
expertise in computational cardiac modelling and simulation, and in
particular in cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac mechanics, and
computational fluid dynamics. Specifically, the following skills will be
expected:

- Strong background in mathematics, and in particular calculus, is
desired to cope with modelling based on differential equations and derived
formulations.

- Programming skills in C++ are mandatory since it is expected that
candidate is able to implement all the models developed in the lab. Matlab
programming knowledge will be desirable.

- Finite element modelling knowledge is also required, and previous
experience in this area will be highly valued.

- Proficiency in spoken and written English is compulsory.

Contract: An initial contract of 2 year will be offered to the successful
candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of
review.

research interests and future plans quoting ref. no CILAB/Cardio/100 in the
subject line, to: alejandro.frangi en upf.edu.

Title: Post-Doctoral fellow in mesh generation and vascular haemodynamics

Job description: This post is connected to a national technology platform
funded by the Ministry of Industry that aims at applying computational
imaging and simulation technologies to diagnostic and interventional
planning of intracranial aneurysms. The objective is to develop innovative
technologies for the investigation of aneurysm morphology, morphodynamics,
biomechanics and haemodynamics computed from subject-specific vascular
models. The main focus of the research will be in computational methods for
vascular grid generation and haemodynamic simulation.

The candidate will have to interact with members of the lab working on
related topics as well as with our clinical collaborators at several
academic hospitals in Barcelona and in Europe.

Candidate expected skills: Candidates must hold a PhD degree and have
expertise in computational vascular modelling and simulation, and in
particular in mathematical modelling, numerical methods, finite element grid
generation, and CFD simulation techniques. Specifically, the following
skills will be expected:

- Strong background in mathematics and numerical methods is
required.

- Knowledge and experience with finite element modelling and
computational methods for physiological flow modelling is also required.

- Good knowledge of fluid dynamics phenomena in complex vascular
geometries will be highly valued.

- Experience with open-source mesh generation and CFD simulation
packages are desirable.

- Programming skills in C++ are mandatory.

- Proficiency in spoken and written English is compulsory.

Contract: An initial contract of 2 year will be offered to the successful
candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of
review.
