Abstract:

This thesis presents a method for solving problems of fluid-structure
interaction (FSI), for both compressible and incompressible fluids,
using a Lagrangian description of the movement. The use of a unique
formulation allows to treat the solid and fluid sub-domains as a
single entity in situations of fluid-structure interaction. This
basically means that the domain analysis, containing both the fluid
and the solid interacting with each other, is seen as a single
continuous domain with different material properties assigned to each
of the sub-domains (fluid and solid). This allows making no
distinction between fluids and solids for the numerical solution using
the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM). First, the equations of
motion in a Lagrangian framework are derived to describe the problem
of FSI. The Lagrangian formulation offers a more natural framework to
follow the movement of the media and facilitates the implementation of
the boundary conditions. However, traditional methods of
discretization, as the Finite Element Method (FEM), present problems
because of a serious distortion mesh caused by the movement of
nodes. Second, a new numerical technique based on the use of set of
nodes (or particles) is successfully implemented for the approximate
solution of differential equations in partial derivatives, which
include the PFEM. Finally, various problems of fluid-structure
interaction, for both compressible and incompressible fluids, are
solved. The PFEM appears to be suitable for the simulation of problems
which present free surface flows and large movements of solids in
fluids.
