One PhD student position at GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam

The Geodynamic Modelling section of the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) in
Potsdam (Germany) offers one PhD student position.
The team at our section has a broad expertise on thermo-mechanical
numerical models in general and related to the Andes in particular.
Information on the group is available at:
http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/portal/gfz/Struktur/Departments/Department+2/sec25.

Our general aim is quantitative understanding of the key processes
operating in the solid Earth at a large range of spatial and temporal
scales at plate boundaries (subduction, collision, rifting and
transform faults), within the plates (plumes and large igneous
provinces) and in deeper mantle (mantle convection) which are
constrained by the multidisciplinary surface observations acquired by
the GFZ and international scientific community.

The project with the open position will be run in cooperation with the
University of Buenos Aires. It will study the episodic East-West
magmatic-arc migrations in the Neuquen Andes since latest Cretaceous
by means of thermo-mechanical models of subduction. Our goal is to
quantify and determine the key factors that caused this phenomena.
Understanding the geodynamic processes that caused arc migration are
very important for the evolution of the orogen, because they directly
impact the style and timing of lithospheric deformation and
sedimentary basin evolution by controlling heat flow variability in
general and evolution of magmatic centres in particular.

Profile:
* MSc or equivalent in Geophysics, Geology, Physics or Computer
Science. Good programming skills are a plus.
* Research interest in subduction systems and/or numerical models.
* Interest in a scientific career and in interdisciplinary project
collaboration
* Good knowledge of English (German and Spanish is of advantage).

Starting date: As soon as possible, on the basis of competitive
application (position is open until filled).

Contract duration: three (3) years.

Contact: Potential candidates should contact Dr. Javier Quinteros
(javier.quinteros en gfz-potsdam.de) with (i) an updated CV and (ii) a
motivation letter. Questions are also welcome via e-mail.
