Bahía Blanca, the city

Bahía Blanca, located in the south of the province of Buenos Aires, was founded on April 11, 1828 by Colonel Ramón Bernabé Estomba and today, the city has established itself as one of the most important ones in the country for its commercial activity and its cultural, educational and sports centers.

The city is a hub for regional, national and international transport and communications thanks to its land and maritime infrastructure and its proximity to the deep-water commercial port located in the neighboring town of Ingeniero White.

It also offers convenient and comfortable train services departing and arriving at Estacion Sud. The new bus terminal connects Bahia Blanca with other cities in Argentina and neighboring countries. There are 18 bus lines that cover practically the entire urban and suburban area.  Last but not least, Comandante Espora Airport, 12 km east of the city, serves as a link, operating domestic flights, between the region and the rest of the country.

In terms of culture, the city has important theaters and museums. The Bahía Blanca Municipal Theater is one of the most outstanding cultural centers. In addition, there are several museums that cover different areas of knowledge, art and history such as the Museo del Puerto, Museo y Archivo Histórico, Museo de Bellas Artes, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Museo Taller Ferrowhite, Museo de Ciencias, Museo Fortín Cuatreros and Museo del Deporte, among others.

As for education, Bahía Blanca offers all levels and modalities from kindergarten, preschool, elementary, secondary, special education schools, to tertiary and university education. In fact, two of the most prestigious universities, Universidad Nacional del Sur y Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, are in the city.

Bahía Blanca has been referred to as “The capital of Argentine basketball” and this is because it is the city that has given the country the most highly competitive basketball players who have not only played for national teams but have also exported their talent to the European Federation of Basketball (FIBA Europe) and even to the NBA.

There are 113 green spaces in the city, among which Parque de Mayo, Parque Independencia, Paseo de las Esculturas, Paseo de la Mujer and Plaza Rivadavia can be highlighted. In addition, it has 4 nature reserves: Municipal Coastal Reserve, Cueva de los Leones Reserve, Gaviota Cangrejera Nature Reserve and Falsa y Verde Nature Reserve. Bahia Blanca is truly a city with a strong commitment to the environment.
