I was fortunate to share with the honoree a good part of our undergraduate and graduate training, and a few more years in the Computational Mechanics group at the Bariloche Atomic Center. I will present a summary of the group’s activities, from our first steps in the discipline (in the mid-1980s) to the present, highlighting Gustavo’s influence in shaping its profile. The presentation will cover the days when we programmed recursive algorithms in FORTRAN IV, drew two-dimensional fields on a line printer, and ordered reprints of publications by postal mail, up to the present day, when much of the programming work consists of using widely available libraries, printers becoming obsolete due to the availability of screens everywhere, and the possibility of holding virtual meetings with colleagues regardless of geographic location.
