1) charla y 2) beca de doctorado en USA.
1) El Instituto de Tecnología de UADE invita a la charla que dará el
Dr. Pablo M. Carrica (IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering, The
University of Iowa, USA) titulada "Toward Large-Scale Computations of
Ship Motions with Dynamic Overset Curvilinear Grids". La charla será
el jueves 16 de Julio, de 17 a 18hs, en el Aula 5, 2do piso, edificio
Chile 1, Universidad Argentina de la Empresa, Lima 717, Ciudad
Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Por cualquier consulta, contactar a María

Abstract: I'll present the results of an ongoing effort to improve the
serial and parallel performance of the overset curvilinear grids
based, single-phase level set code CFDShip-Iowa version 4, as well as
the ability to handle large-scale problems. In CFDShip-Iowa version 4
large-amplitude motions are handled using dynamic overset grids. The
connectivity between the grids is handled using Suggar, an overset
interpolation code with general motions and body hierarchy
capabilities. CFDShip-Iowa calls Suggar every nonlinear iteration (in
implicit motions mode) or every time step (in explicit motions
mode). Since CFDShip-Iowa scales better than Suggar, increasing the
number of grid points significantly increases the fraction of time
used by Suggar. Three actions have been taken to mitigate this
problem. First, a preassembly step was added in Suggar to take
advantage of grids that belong to the same dynamic group and therefore
will not move relatively to each other during the computation. Second,
the use of named pipes to communicate and synchronize Suggar with
CFDShip-Iowa was replaced by MPI code in which Suggar runs in a set of
processors separate from those used by CFDShip-Iowa. Finally, a lagged
mode was added in which CFDShip-Iowa estimates the motions of the
different objects for the next time that the connectivity is
needed. In this mode Suggar can run simultaneously with CFDShip-Iowa
and synchronization is only needed when the connectivity is used by
the flow solver. In explicit motions mode the method has been tested
and results are very satisfactory as well. Computations are presented
for the surface combatant model DTMB 5415 in straight ahead condition,
20 degrees pure drift, forward speed diffraction and pitch and heave,
these last two cases in waves.
2) El Dr. Carrica ofrece una beca de doctorado en el IIHR en el tema
"Two-phase flow modeling and code implementation". Los interesados
pueden escribirle a pcarrica en engineering.uiowa.edu y/o acercarse el
día de la charla para discutir con él los detalles.
