Cylindrical metal tanks are commonly used for storage of various petrochemical products. The response and failure process of steel tanks under shock waves produced by external explosions constitute complex, very fast dynamic problems, with a significant degree of coupling and high nonlinearity. The behavior of a reduced-scale cylindrical tank under external explosions is studied with an explicit multi-physics code in this paper. The effects the explosive charge position, the geometry and the material properties on the tank response are analyzed. Additionally, the effect of the liquid inside the tank and the presence of other tanks or obstacles in the path of the wave are taken into account. The deformation patterns and the possible damage of the tank are studied. The results show the importance of analyzing the coupled problem and are of interest for the design and safety verification of this type of tanks against external explosions.
