Abstract

Congested traffic assignment aims to determine how traffic is distributed and what the travel times are within an urban network. Under stationary conditions, the problem is modeled following Wardrop’s principle, whereby each user seeks to minimize their own travel time, leading to a large-scale optimization problem. Recently, an iterative approach known as the Physarum model has been proposed and shown to be effective in solving such problems. In this work, the model is extended to address dynamic traffic assignment, which accounts for variations in demand and traffic characteristics over time. The formulation is presented along with numerical results that illustrate its efficiency.
