This paper presents the structural behaviour of a steel tank with a supported conical roof under external explosions. The problem is modelled with an explicit multi-physics code. A coupled analysis is performed considering the interaction between the blast wave and the tank. First, the structural response is analysed for different explosive masses located at the same distance from the tank. The displacements and the total plastic of the tank are analysed as a measure of the material damage. Based on these results, guidelines are established that may be useful for defining safety criteria for the rupture of this type of tanks under external blasting. Secondly, the alternative of simplifying the model by simulating the roof structure by increasing the thickness of the shell is analysed. Based on the results of this analysis, a criterion for determining the equivalent thickness under blast conditions is established and compared with the criteria presented by other authors for the same tank under other types of loading.
