Abstract

A detection method is presented for multiple cracks by analizing the effect caused by the presence of a point mass in the vibration of beams. A beam model with point masses and general elastic restrictions is used to develop a detection method for three cracks located at different positions and crack depths. The differential equations and boundary conditions are obtained naturally with the application of the calculus of variations techniques, and the detection algorithm is developed based on the numerical results obtained with the Ritz variational method.
